As a Muslim imam, I would advise you that the first and foremost step towards becoming a better Muslim is to strengthen your faith and increase your knowledge of Islam. This can be achieved through a combination of study, prayer, and good deeds. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلاَ تَمُوتُنَّ إِلاَّ وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him]." (Surah Al-Imran, 3:102)
So, the first step towards becoming a better Muslim is to have Taqwa (fear of Allah) in your heart and to submit to His will. This involves studying and understanding the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and putting them into practice in your daily life.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim." (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 224)
This shows the importance of seeking knowledge in Islam. Therefore, it is important to learn about the religion through reputable sources and to surround yourself with people who can guide and support you in your journey towards becoming a better Muslim.
Another important aspect of becoming a better Muslim is to perform good deeds and to follow the Sunnah (the way of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) in your daily life. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ ۚ وَحَسُنَ أُولَٰئِكَ رَفِيقًا
"And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions." (Surah An-Nisa', 4:69)
In conclusion, to become a better Muslim, one should focus on strengthening their faith, increasing their knowledge of Islam, following the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, performing good deeds, and surrounding themselves with positive influences. By doing so, one can strive towards achieving the ultimate goal of pleasing Allah (SWT) and attaining Jannah (paradise).
