This class will provide an introduction to the basics of entrepreneurship, as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful entrepreneur. Topics covered will include different types of businesses, business models, legal issues, financing, marketing, and more.
Class Objectives:
1. To provide an understanding of the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.
2. To introduce the skills and knowledge necessary to launch and operate a successful business.
3. To understand legal issues and regulations associated with starting a business.
4. To explore different financing options for entrepreneurs.
5. To gain knowledge of marketing and sales strategies for businesses.
Class Schedule:
Session 1: Introduction to Entrepreneurship
Readings: Introduction to Entrepreneurship by D. Sexton & H. Haines
Assignments: Read the introduction to the text, discuss the topic in class
Summary: This session will introduce the students to the basics of entrepreneurship. We will discuss the definition of entrepreneurship and the different types of businesses.
Session 2: Business Models
Readings: Business Model Generation by A. Osterwalder & Y. Pigneur
Assignments: Read the introduction to the text, research and present a business model of their choice
Summary: This session will introduce the students to business models and how to create them. We will discuss the different components of a business model and how to analyze and assess a business model.
Session 3: Legal Issues
Readings: Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship by C. Pannone
Assignments: Read Chapter 1 of the text, research and discuss the legal issues related to the business model chosen in Session 2
Summary: This session will introduce the students to the legal issues associated with starting a business. We will discuss the different types of business entities, the legal requirements for each, and the potential liability issues.
Session 4: Financing
Readings: Financing Your Business by D. McAdam
Assignments: Read Chapter 1 of the text, research and discuss different financing options for the business model chosen in Session 2
Summary: This session will introduce the students to the different financing options available for entrepreneurs. We will discuss venture capital, angel investors, government grants, and other financing options.
