Chapter 1: Unearthed Shadows
The hum of the lunar module's engines filled the cabin, blending seamlessly with the rhythmic beats of Commander Lucas Hartwell's heart. Floating weightlessly, he gazed at the vast expanse outside. Stars twinkled and the Earth shone in its radiant blue and green. However, it was the moon's desolate landscape that captured his attention now.
"Commencing routine scan," Lucas whispered into his headset. As the craft moved closer to the dark side of the moon, sensors beeped and the screen before him displayed images in real-time. Patterns of craters and valleys formed a familiar picture.
But as the lunar module coasted over a vast plateau, Lucas's steady breath caught in his throat. An anomaly on the screen made him squint and then gasp. The image was unmistakable—a large, geometric structure that definitely wasn't a part of the moon's natural topography.
"Base, this is Hartwell," he called into the microphone, trying to keep his voice steady. "I've got something... unusual on the scan."
There was a brief pause, and Lucas could almost sense the tension on the other end. "Describe the anomaly, Commander."
"It looks... artificial. As if someone built it. I've never seen anything like it." Lucas responded, struggling to comprehend the implications.
Suddenly, static filled the line, and a different voice interrupted, deeper and more authoritative. "Commander Hartwell, redirect your module to the designated coordinates. Do not approach the anomaly. I repeat, do not approach."
Lucas's mind raced. This wasn't standard protocol. He'd always been directed by Mission Control, but this voice was unfamiliar.
"Why? What's that structure?" Lucas demanded.
"We will discuss upon your return, Commander. For now, prioritize your safety," the voice replied coldly.
But Lucas's curiosity was insatiable. With a calculated risk, he rerouted the module to give him a closer view. As he neared the mysterious formation, it became evident this wasn't a chance discovery. The structure was intricately designed with markings Lucas couldn't decipher.
His pulse quickened as he took photos. These would be evidence, regardless of whatever awaited him back on Earth. Suddenly, a blinding light engulfed the module. Systems went offline, alarms blared, and a deafening silence followed.
When Lucas awoke, he found himself in a dimly lit room, strapped to a table. Hovering above him were unfamiliar faces, their expressions grim.
"Commander Hartwell," the deep voice from earlier boomed, "Welcome back to Earth. There's much we need to discuss."
