One day, Newton tried to move him. Newton: “Whiskers, get up!” Whiskers: No response. Newton decided to nudge the pillow, but Whiskers just stayed there, completely still. Frustrated, Newton gave the pillow a big push—suddenly, Whiskers zoomed off the table! Moral of the story? An object at rest (Whiskers) stays at rest, and an object in motion (also Whiskers) stays in motion—until an external force (Newton’s push) acts on it! 2nd Law: The Great Shopping Cart Disaster (F = ma) Bob was at the supermarket. He grabbed a small shopping cart and easily pushed it around. “This is fun!” he thought. But then, he added a 50-pound bag of dog food. Suddenly, pushing the cart wasn’t so easy. Then, he added a crate of watermelons. Now it barely moved. He tried to give it a big shove—it moved so fast he couldn’t stop it in time! CRASH! Right into a display of jelly jars. Lesson? The more mass an object has, the more force it takes to move it (F = ma). And the more force you use, the faster it accelerates! Bob learned this the messy way. 3rd Law: The Slap That Backfired (Action = Reaction) Tim and Jake were arguing over the last slice of pizza. In a moment of rage, Tim decided to slap Jake’s hand away. But, in a twist of fate, as he slapped, he felt an equal and opposite slap back on his own hand. Both boys stared at each other, holding their stinging hands in shock. Jake: “Did the pizza just fight back?” Tim: “No… I think this is Newton’s Third Law.” For every action (slap), there is an equal and opposite reaction (counter slap). Science strikes again!
