Yes, there's correlation. More screen time, more reported anxiety. But here's where it gets messy: is Instagram actually causing depression, or are already-depressed teens just gravitating toward Instagram? The studies I reviewed couldn't untangle this. What genuinely surprised me — and I almost didn't include this because it complicates my argument — was finding three longitudinal studies showing no significant effect at all. So where does that leave us? Somewhere uncomfortable in the middle. Not satisfying, I know. But honestly? That's where the data actually points right now.
