Game Type: Cooperative Strategy Board Game
Target Age: 8 - 99
Game Mechanics: Resource Management, Movement on a Board, Tile Placement, Card Drafting
Game Overview:
Sherwood Showdown is a cooperative strategy board game in which players take on the roles of Robin Hood and his Merry Men as they try to foil the evil plans of the Sheriff of Nottingham and protect the citizens of Nottinghamshire. To achieve this, they must move across the board to gather resources, recruit citizens to their cause, complete missions, and battle the Sheriff's forces. The game is won if the players successfully complete enough missions before the town's resources or the Merry Men's morale is depleted.
Components:
1. Game Board: The board is divided into three sections - Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle, and the Village. Each section is made of smaller hexagonal tiles that can be rearranged to create a different configuration for each game.
2. Character Tokens: Each player chooses a character that comes with its own unique abilities and special moves. There is a character token for each of the following Merry Men: Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Little John, Will Scarlet, and Friar Tuck.
3. Resource Tokens: These tokens represent resources the players collect during the game, such as wealth (gold coins), food (bread loaves), and morale (feather quills).
4. Villager Cards: These cards represent citizens of Nottinghamshire who have a variety of skills and can help the Merry Men in their quest. Each card has a unique ability, as well as a resource cost to recruit them.
5. Mission Cards: These cards represent the various missions that the Merry Men must complete in order to win the game. These could be preventing the Sheriff from collecting taxes or helping villagers in need.
6. Enemy Tokens: Tokens representing the Sheriff's forces, including guards, knights, and the Sheriff himself.
7. Dice: Standard six-sided dice used for resolving movement and combat.
8. Tracking Board: A separate board used to track the progress of the Merry Men's resources and morale, as well as the Sheriff's influence.
Gameplay:
1. Setup: Players choose a character and place their token on the corresponding starting area of the board (Sherwood Forest for Merry Men and Nottingham Castle for the Sheriff's forces). Place the resources randomly on designated spaces throughout the game board. Shuffle the Villager and Mission cards and place them face down on the board in their designated spots.
2. Movement: Players take turns moving their character tokens on the board by rolling a die and moving that many spaces. They can move to any adjacent space or use their special abilities for additional movement.
3. Collect Resources: If a player ends their turn on a space with a resource token, they can pick it up and add it to their stash.
4. Recruit Villagers: If a player lands on a designated villager space, they may choose to recruit a villager by paying the required resources listed on the Villager card they draw.
5. Complete Missions: On their turn, a player may attempt a mission by drawing a Mission card and attempting to complete the requirements listed. If successful, the Merry Men gain morale and resources. If unsuccessful, the players may lose resources and morale based on the failed mission.
6. Combat: If a player encounters one of the Sheriff's forces, they must engage in combat. Combat is resolved through rolling dice and using the character's abilities, with the higher dice result determining the winner. If the player wins, they gain loot and can continue their turn. If they lose, the character is sent back to their starting location and morale is reduced.
7. Game End: The game ends when the Sheriff's influence reaches a critical level or the Merry Men's morale is reduced to zero, resulting in a victory for the Sheriff, or when the Merry Men successfully complete enough Missions.
Artwork and Graphics:
The game board should be beautifully illustrated with the woodland ambiance of Sherwood Forest, the imposing Nottingham Castle, and a lively medieval village. Each character token can be a cartoony representation of their respective characters, while resource tokens can be depicted as small but detailed icons.
